Choose the kind of start you want
For company, ask a club whether its session supports walking breaks and your current pace. For structure, look for a beginner programme from a qualified coach or a recognised public-health provider. A directory listing is not a personalised training plan.
Separate training from race entry
A 5 km event can still have a cut-off time or age requirement. Check whether walking is allowed, how the course is supported and when you need to collect your bib before paying.
Keep progress simple
Record where you went and how the outing felt. Time outside, consistency and confidence finding your way are useful things to notice alongside distance. You do not need a watch or public activity feed to begin.
Ask useful questions
Tell the organiser you are new and ask about regrouping, the last runner and stopping early. If you have a health concern about starting exercise, seek advice from a qualified healthcare professional rather than relying on a generic plan.
